To provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment to play tennis where every person feels respected, valued, and celebrated for who they are, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
OUR HISTORY
Tennis Lambda was born from a friendly confrontation between players from Montreal and Toronto, an idea that Yvan Germain, the founder of our organization, had in 1991.
Realizing that there was some interest from the LGBTQ2+ community in Montreal for a tennis league just for them, Yvan started Tennis Lambda, which became active in the summer of 1992.
The Montreal/Toronto match-ups stopped when the "Coupe de la Reine" tournament was created in 1994. This tournament was and still is open to all players, regardless of their city of residence.
In 1999, Tennis Lambda joined the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA). The "Coupe de la Reine" became international thanks to the initiative and support of Terry Brennan, who shared the presidency of the tournament with Yvan Germain for the first time.
WHY TENNIS LAMBDA?
In the 1970s, the Greek letter lambda was adopted as the symbol of the Gay Activists Alliance, a group that played an important role in the LGBTQ2+ rights movement in the United States. The use of the letter lambda as a symbol for the alliance was meant to signify unity and liberation.
Over time, the lambda symbol has become associated with the broader LGBTQ2+ community and has been used in a variety of ways, including as a symbol on the flags and logos of LGBTQ2+ organizations.
